Bedford RL
4 ton cargo truck built by Bedford, based on the successful civilian "S" Type, for the Armed Forces
The FV-1300 RL was used by all three branches of the Armed Forces and in a number of roles - GS/Troop carrier, Radio body, REME Light Aid, Wrecker, Fuel bowser etc. !
I took my HGV Class 3 on a Bedford RL-W, 21 EP 60, again whilst with "C" Troop, 215 Sqdn. The petrol engine was an easy revving unit and would cruise comfortably at 55mph when unladen. Apart from the cramped cab there were no real vices with these vehicles. Perhaps the worst thing was when the passenger seat tray moved off it's rails and dropped - shorting out one of the battery teminals. I can recall coming home through Stratford in Londons East End when this happened and my friend in the passenger seat immedaiely bailed out of the cab - whilst we were doing 30 mph!!! Luckily he was unhurt and no damage was done to the vehicle apart from the little melted area on the seat tray!!
The RL was replaced by the M series in the early to mid Seventies.
An interesting variant was used by the Danish Army with a revised cab format:
